Location Description

The immediate area surrounding the Lorne Avenue and Park Street intersection in Brandon, Manitoba is residential. The southeast portion of this intersection borders Rideau Park. This intersection is nearby both Assiniboine Community College and Brandon University. The neighborhoods on either side of this location include many single family homes organized along typical street grids. The footage gathered illustrates there is ample on-street parking that often goes unused. These roadways are nearby 18th Street (highway 10) and John Bracken Highway (highway 1A).

  • A motorist struck Grant Hamilton as Grant was cycling east on Lorne Avenue.
  • Hamilton flipped over the hood of the car. He suffered multiple injuries, including losing his left pinky finger.

  • This intersection featured a 50 km/h (~31 mph) speed limit up until July 1, 2023 when the city began piloting a reduced speed perimeter of 30 km/h (18.6 mph) around Rideau Park. This pilot project was not a direct result of this crash, but Strong Towns was interested in analyzing the area just before this change began.
